Freepository UI – Revisited

Freepository Ver. 3.0
Today I received a well articulated email from one of my freepository members. In it, he basically said the new UI sucked. Of course, he was polite about it and didn’t use those words exactly, but the gist was this: it was far better before, why did you fsck it up?

As you may have noticed from visiting the site, I am implementing a Premium Edition for which I will charge a $5 monthly subscription. As part of that work, I prepared the UI to handle the new functions that will come with Premium Edition. This involved a complete rewrite of the UI, with regard to menu placements etc. There were previously at least four menus on the site, and some pages introduced a fifth. This was ugly, and in my opinion, difficult & counter-intuitive to navigate.

But here is my first real feedback on the new UI, coming from a site designer in Germany: it sucks.

So I’m taking another look..

  • Today I received another member report through the support forum stating that "... the home page doesn't render well & menus disappear after you login" when using Mozilla. I asked for more detail, but this is pretty serious.

I'm going to take another hard look at the menu system, as there may be some edge case that is hindering the menu display.

This is a bit of suprise, because the new menus both work for me (and I think look better), but also work well for those members to whom I previewed it.
