Development of Freepository Premium Edition is progressing well. The primary mechanism for allowing members to subscribe has been implemented & tested, and the additional tools integrate nicely with the new member dashboard. This makes Freepository a full Software Development Management (SDM) Portal providing remotely implemented, securely accessible development infrastructure.
The Premium Edition adds Wiki, Mail Lists and Bug Tracking to the member’s dashboard. This creates a lightweight, yet complete software project management environment for the members. Each of these tools are file-based; this allows for fast on-the-fly deployments, and further provides the members with the ability to tar up their project’s files and take them when they wish to unsubscribe. A similar feature was implemented several years ago that allows members to tar up their source code on-the-fly and download it at anytime.
The Personal Edition, which has been available free of charge since 1999, provides basic, rock-solid cvs-based version control that members can securely access from anywhere on the planet. They can use seven different clients to access their freepositories, while the new tools are web-centric and will be available only through their browser session.
Developers are accustomed to using web-based project management tools, so this is a natural fit. The geographically dispersed teams that today use freepository from all corners of the globe for secure, reliable source control can now add tools that facilitate developer communciation, requirements documentation, and bug & issue tracking. All this without deploying a single piece of software to their desktops.
